What's this weird papery stuff on my coffee?
My dad thought it was dirty! That papery stuff you see wrapped or strewn about on your coffee beans is called chaff. It’s the outer layer of surrounds the green or raw cherry before it’s roasted. You can more or less of it in the final roasting process depending on how it was processed (washed, natural, honey etc. )
It’s nothing to worry about and when you grind it will just get ground up with the rest of the coffee. Selling coffee, they try to present it as pretty as possible, so they will attempt to remove most of it. For us, we do our best, but it’s not perfect.
As it doesn’t affect taste, I’m not too concerned with it as a micro roaster.
